VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a protocol for translation voice through the Web using packet switched networks. This protocol can work with every packet network. Often people use the name VoIP like the common name for transmission of voice through the Internet but not for the protocol making it. There are several another name for VoIP: Broadband Phone, Voice over Broadband, Broadband telephony, IP Telephony and Internet telephony. The pronouncation is voyp. Now many companies provide VoIP service, that’s a good commercial realization of protocol first invented for the ARPANET providers. The oldest experimental Network Voice Protocol was created in 1973.
Some money from this service are due to utilize a network to translate voice and data, especially it is important for underutilized network capacity. That takes no additional cost. Usually callings between two VoIP phone are free or very cheap, but the calling from VoIP to public switched telephone has a cost, and VoIP user have to defray the cost of conversation. How does IP protocol work with the voice? It carry voice like a digital audio, translating telephony signals into data with data compression techniques, pack it in a pockets and send to the endpoint. There are two basic PSTN to VoIP services: access numbers and Direct Inward Dialing (DID). Access numbers technology require to dial a personal number of the VoIP user and DID usually connect people directly to the VoIP user.
